THIRD STAGE

Photograph Sand Tiger Shark

I went to the city of Morehead, North Carolina from August 4 to the 9th with the intention of photographing the third shark and, in the quest to find the 10 most dangerous sharks in the world. This was the time to photograph the Sand Tiger Sand, whose jaws may scare every human being, who sees this animal.

This place is world famous to dive for two reasons; the first one is the number of wrecks, where you could find all kinds of ships, even a german submarine sunk by the American Army, some of the shipwrecks were sunk due to the bad weather while other were placed there with the purpose to house artificial reefs. The second reason is the tiger sand shark they had chosen this wrecks to live in therefore this ships are with a great variety of tropical fish, which serve the tiger sand shark as food.

We dove for three days through the different shipwrecks, like the Titan, the USS Indra and the USCG Spar. At these diving, we got the chance to see turtles, a huge amount of reef fish and in one dive, we saw more than twenty tiger sand sharks.

Diving with these powerful sharks that can measure up to 9.87 feet and weight up 1000 pounds. It is thrilling, they glide though the water with a hand full of fish around their bodies, and these smart fishes use the shark as shield for protection for other menacing and bigger threats.

While diving you can see them swim next to the grey and rusty structures from the wreck as they were ghosts from the ship´s crew.

It was impressive, we got so close to some sharks that we were able to touch their bellies and see their jaws as near as 20 cm from the lenses of our cameras.

In this journey, I had the chance to meet with great photographers and submarine videographers like Andy Murch, Scott Johson, and Joe Romeiro among others, who gave me excellent advices to improve my photographs. I also shared some valuable moments to chat about what we like the best, “Diving with sharks”

With this stage finished, we had dived with three of the most dangerous sharks: Tiger shark, Bull shark and Tiger Sand shark. At our next stage we will be photographing the Mako shark and the Blue shark at Catalina Island USA and if we are lucky we will get to the 50% from the “Shark Project”

Tiburón a fotografiar: Tiburón tigre de arena.

Del 4 al 9 de agosto de este año, fui a la ciudad de Morehead en Carolina del Norte con la intención de fotografiar al tercer tiburón el la búsqueda de los diez tiburones mas peligrosos del mundo.  En esta ocasión nos toco fotografiar al tiburón tigre arenoso, un tiburón que tiene una mandíbula que da miedo a todo ser humano que lo ve.

Este lugar es mundialmente famoso para el buceo por dos razones: primero, la gran cantidad de naufragios que hay en donde encuentras barcos de todo tipo y hasta un submarino alemán que fue hundido por el ejercito americano, algunos de los barcos se hundieron por el mal clima, mientras que otros se colocaron con el propósito de crear arrecifes artificiales. La segunda razón son los “tiburones tigres de arena” que han escogido algunos de estos barcos para vivir, debido a que se encuentran llenos de peces que les sirven como fuente de alimentación.

Buceamos por tres días en diferentes naufragios, en el Titan, el USS Indra y en el USCG Spar, en estos buceos logramos ver de todo, tortugas, una gran variedad de peces y los tiburones tigre de arena que llegamos a ver mas 20 en un solo buceo.

El buceo con estos poderosos tiburones que llegan a medir mas de tres metros y pesar 500 Kg. es apasionante, se desplazan por el agua muy tranquilos y en algunas ocasiones rodeados pequeños peces que los utilizan como escudo para defenderse de  los peces de mayor tamaño, los cuales no se acercan por ser presas de los tiburones.

Mientras estas buceando los ves pasar cerca de las grisáceas y oxidadas estructuras de los barcos, lo que los hace verse como los fantasmas de los tripulantes de las naves.

Era impresionante ya que los llegamos a tener a distancias el las que les podías acariciar el vientre y ver las mandíbulas a no mas de 20 centímetros del lente de la cámara.

En este viaje conocí a famosos fotógrafos y videografos subacuaticos, como Andy Murch, Scott Johson, Joe Romeiro y algunos otros mas, los que me dieron algunos consejos para mejorar mi fotografía y compartí varios momentos para platicar sobre el tema que tanto nos gusta a todos, “el buceo con los tiburones”. 

Con esta etapa cumplida ya llevamos tres de los mas peligrosos, el tiburón tigre, el tiburón toro y el tiburón tigre de arena, en la siguiente etapa pensamos fotografiar al tiburón mako y al tiburón azul en la Isla Catalina, California USA, y si tenemos suerte llegaremos al 50% del proyecto tiburón.

Primer día de buceo, 6/08/10.- Son las 19:30 horas y parece que fueran las 24:00 horas, estoy muy cansado pero contento.
Me levante a las 5:00 para estar listo y llegar al centro de buceo a las 6:00 en donde conocí al anfitrión del viaje Andy Murch, para mi sorpresa al llegar nos comentan que el clima esta mal y que no podemos salir, ¿Que? si se repetía la mala suerte de los tiburones ballena. Nos mandaron a descansar al hotel y que nos llamarían para ver si salíamos, a las 10:00 suena el teléfono y la buena notica llego, ¡vamos a bucear!.

Dado que salinos tarde no pudimos llegar a los naufragios donde esta la mayor concentración de de tiburones, así que fuimos a dos naufragios, uno llamado el "Titan" y  el otro el "USS Indra", en donde tuvimos la oportunidad de ver mas de 8 tiburones que iban desde uno a tres metros, a estos tiburones los acompañaban varias especies, barracudas, esmedregales, sardinas que usaban a los tiburones para protegerse de los depredadores.

 

La confinación perfecta, tiburones con naufragios. Esperemos que el día de mañana sea igual o mejor.

Blog of the third stage of "Shark Project" day 2

First day of diving, 6/08/10.- it is 7:30 pm and fell´s like 12:00 am, I'm very tired but happy.

I got up at 5:00 am to get ready and get to the dive center at 6:00 where I met the host of the trip Andy Murch, to my surprise when we arrived, they say that the weather was bad and we can not leave, What? repeated if the bad luck of the whale shark. They send me back to the hotel and tell me to wait, at 10:00 the phone rings and the good news came, let's dive!.

We could not reach the wreck where the highest concentration of sharks, so we went to two shipwrecks, one called the "Titan" and the other the "USS Indra," where we had the opportunity to see more 8 sharks ranging from one to three meters, these sharks were accompanied by several species, barracudas, esmedregales, sardines used to sharks to protect themselves from predators.

Truly the perfect confinement, sharks shipwrecks. Hopefully tomorrow is equal or better.

Bitácora de la tercer etapa del "Proyecto Tiburón"

Parte 1

5/08/2010.- Llegamos por la madrugada a la cuidad Morehead, en Carolina de Norte, USA, en donde esperamos fotografiar al los Tiburones Tigre de Arena. El día de hoy fui por la mañana fui a registrarme a el centro de buceo, con los que estar por tres buceando por tres días para conseguir el objetivo de la tercer etapa del "Proyecto Tiburón", una ves registrado aproveche el día para preparar mi equipo fotográfico y conocer el acuario de la ciudad, en donde pude observar en una pecera por un buen tiempo a los tiburones tigre de arena.

 

También me informe un poco de las raíces de este lugar y para sorpresa mía, me comentaron que este lugar fueron los territorios de Edward Teach , mejor conocido como el pirata Barbanegra, quien fuera uno de los marineros desocupados de la Marina Real Británica, tras la guerra de sucesión española, inició sus actividades delictivas bajo el mando de Benjamin Hornigold. Su más sonado ataque fue realizado en la localidad de Charleston, en mayo de 1718. Fue aliado del gobernador de Carolina de Norte, Charles Eden, quien llegó a perdonar sus actividades ilegales a cambio de obtener un provecho de los saqueos realizados por el pirata.

Blog of the third stage of "Shark Project" part one

We arrived at dawn 5/08/2010 to Morehead City, North Carolina, USA, where we hope to photograph the Sand Tiger Sharks. 

 
Today morning I went to register at the dive center, where we will be diving for three days to comlite the objective of the third stage of "Shark Project",  a registration advantage see the day to prepare my photographic equipment and know the city aquarium, where I observed in a fish bowl for a good time the sand tiger sharks.  

I also report some of the roots of this place and to my surprise, I was told that this place were the territories of Edward Teach, better known as the pirate Blackbeard, who was one of the men unemployed in the Royal Navy, after Spanish war of succession began their criminal activities under the command of Benjamin Hornigold. His most notorious attack was carried out in the town of Charleston, in May 1718. He was an ally of the governor of North Carolina, Charles Eden, who came to forgive their illegal activities in exchange for a benefit from the looting carried out by the pirate.
